The Matjhabeng Local Municipality Security Task Team was conducting routine patrols last night to safeguard municipal
infrastructure when they encountered three suspects involved in cable theft at Jan Hofmeyr.
The suspects were caught in the act of digging up a 16-metre electrical cable. As the security team approached, one of
the suspects opened fire. In response, the officers returned fire, resulting in one suspect being shot in the leg. The
injured suspect was apprehended on the scene and transported to Bongani Regional Hospital for medical attention.

The remaining two suspects fled into the darkness and remain at large. A cartridge was recovered at the scene, and the
matter is under investigation.
Matjhabeng Local Municipality strongly condemns all acts of infrastructure vandalism and theft. The Municipality remains
committed to working closely with law enforcement agencies to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

The MMC for Infrastructure, Cllr Xolile Masina, is currently overseeing the water carting operations in response to the
ongoing water outage caused by the Vaal Central Water winter maintenance programme.
Water tankers have been dispatched to various residential areas, while essential service institutions and businesses are

Executive Mayor Cllr Thanduxolo Khalipha on 23 July 2025 engaged with residents of Ward 14 during a Mayoral Imbizo held
at Mokgwabong Primary School in Thabong. During his address, the Executive Mayor provided a brief update on the ongoing
water supply interruptions, attributing the challenges to the Vaal Central Water Winter Maintenance programme currently

He further reflected on key Ministerial infrastructure projects aimed at addressing persistent sewer challenges across
Matjhabeng.
Mayor Khalipha also shared progress on Renewable Energy Projects set to be implemented in the municipality, highlighting
their potential to create jobs and unlock economic opportunities for local SMMEs.
He encouraged residents to continue partnering with the municipality by paying for services, which is vital for
sustaining effective and reliable service delivery.
The session afforded community members the opportunity to raise concerns and present submissions directly to the
municipal leadership.
