04
February 2025.
The visit formed part of the MEC's ongoing Housing Projects Inspection, which began in Bethlehem last week.
A briefing with the Acting Mayor Cllr. H Mokhomo, HOD Adv Phahlo, Senior Managers, MMC for Housing, and the technical
teams involved in the construction of the project preceded the site visit.
The following key aspects were highlighted during the meeting:...
- Project Overview: The G-Hostel Project aims to provide 780 quality housing units to the local community.
- Targets and Timelines: The project targets 780 completed units, with 350 units expected to be completed by July 2025,
demonstrating a clear commitment to meeting deadlines.
- Project Management: A facilities company has been appointed to oversee the project, ensuring professional management,
with the Matjhabeng Local Municipality set to take over at a later stage.
Challenges raised included vandalism and theft, which pose a significant threat to the completion of the project.
Stakeholders were urged to collaborate to address these security concerns, emphasizing the need for community
involvement.
MEC Saki Mokoena has pledged to return to G-Hostel with the provincial leadership for the official handover of the first
completed units, emphasizing that "Time is of the essence". He assured that there's sufficient capacity to ensure the
project's timely completion.
Mokoena also highlighted the importance of expediting the handover process, as it would not only bring joy to the
beneficiaries but also help mitigate security and vandalism concerns in the area.
This commitment aligns with the Free State province's broader goals, which emphasizes the importance of investing in
housing, infrastructure, and economic development to improve the lives of citizens.
