The Matjhabeng Local Municipality is working hard to repair and maintain street lights, but ongoing vandalism and theft
continue to undo this progress.
When lights are damaged, our streets become unsafe, criminal activities thrive in darkness, and valuable municipal
resources are wasted on repeated repairs instead of being used for other essential services.
We therefore urge all residents to protect our community by reporting any vandalism or suspicious activity and by taking
pride in safeguarding public infrastructure.

Today, the Executive Mayor of Matjhabeng Local Municipality, Cllr. Thanduxolo Khalipha, hosted Boitumelo Modipa, a Grade
10 learner from Unitas Secondary School, who visited the Executive Mayor’s office to engage in an important dialogue on
the role of government, particularly municipalities, in combating Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
GBV remains a widespread pandemic that continues to devastate families and communities across the country, making it a
critical area of concern for both government and society at large....
During the discussion, Boitumelo raised questions on how the municipality allocates resources, implements programmes,
and drives awareness campaigns aimed at curbing GBV.
The Executive Mayor provided insight into the work being done under his leadership as the political head of the
municipality, highlighting efforts to not only strengthen internal programmes but also to mobilise support from the
private sector, civil society, and other stakeholders in this collective fight.
He reflected on significant interventions, including the Safety and Security Summit convened by the Municipality, which
brought together partners such as the South African Police Service (SAPS), the Department of Social Development, and
other institutions within the security cluster. These engagements are part of a broader commitment to building safer
communities and ensuring a coordinated response to GBV.
The Executive Mayor further shared details on recent platforms of engagement, such as the Men’s Conference and the
Women’s Day commemoration, where multiple stakeholders including the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Safer South
Africa, the Department of Correctional Services, SAPS, faith-based organisations, the Men’s Forum, the Traditional
Healers Association, and traditional leaders overseeing initiation schools, collectively deliberated on strategies to
challenge harmful social norms and strengthen preventative interventions against GBV.
Through this dialogue with a young learner, the Executive Mayor underscored the importance of youth involvement in
shaping solutions and reminded that the fight against GBV requires collective action, vigilance, and continuous
education across all sectors of society.
