MEDIA STATEMENT
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MATJHABENG LOCAL MUNICIPALITY WARNS RESIDENTS AGAINST ILLEGAL DUMPING INTO SEWER SYSTEMS
The Matjhabeng Local Municipality strongly condemns the continuous illegal dumping of rubble, stones, pillows, and other
solid waste materials into sewer manholes in Thabong, Ward 17....
This reckless behavior has once again caused severe blockages in the sewer lines at the same location where the
Municipality previously battled for days to clear the system.
Since last week, municipal teams have been working tirelessly to reopen the affected lines and only managed to restore
flow late this afternoon.
As a result of this unlawful practice, major sewer spillages occurred in the streets, leading to flooding in front of
the Thabong Police Station. Such actions not only damage municipal infrastructure but also create serious health and
environmental hazards for the community.
The Municipality urges residents to refrain from dumping any waste into sewer manholes.
Members of the public are reminded that sewer systems are designed to carry wastewater only, and the disposal of foreign
objects into the network is a punishable offence.
We appeal to the community to play an active role in protecting critical infrastructure by reporting illegal dumping
activities to the Municipality or relevant law enforcement authorities.
Together, we can ensure a cleaner, safer, and healthier Matjhabeng.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
RE: MATJHABENG LOCAL MUNICIPALITY RESPONDS TO VAAL CENTRAL WATER’S UNLAWFUL NOTICE OF WATER RESTRICTIONS.
The Matjhabeng Local Municipality has noted, with great concern, the notice issued by Vaal Central Water to proceed with
water restrictions from midnight on Tuesday, 30 September 2025. This decision comes despite the existence of a court
interdict, granted by the Free State High Court, preventing Vaal Central from carrying out such punitive action.
...
The Municipality finds these actions by Vaal Central to be unfair, irresponsible, and far removed from its constitutional
obligation to ensure the continued and equitable supply of water.
This approach disregards the devastating implications it has on the lives of ordinary residents, who bear no
responsibility for the ongoing dispute between the Municipality and the Water Board.
It is deeply troubling that, while Vaal Central pursues these heavy-handed measures, it has simultaneously delayed
the arbitration process and engaged in actions that can only be described as bad-faith litigation.
We remind the public that, in July 2024, the court already ruled on matters directly linked to this dispute, a ruling
that Vaal Central continues to undermine by its conduct.
The Municipality assures residents that it has taken, and will continue to take, all reasonable steps to protect the
rights and interests of every household and business in Matjhabeng.
We remain steadfast in defending our community against this relentless attack and will continue to pursue all available
legal remedies to safeguard the constitutional right to water.
We call on residents to remain calm and united as the Municipality confronts this challenge on their behalf. The right
to water is not negotiable, it is a cornerstone of human dignity,
health, and safety.
